What to do on the Amethyst Coast
in the Gulf of Lion
The Amethyst Coast, named after a variety of violet quartz, borders the Gulf of Lion and stretches some 200 km from the Côte Vermeille to the Camargue.
Numerous renowned coastal resorts(Sérignan plage, Port Barcarès, Argelès sur mer, Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, etc.) line this authentic, unspoilt and friendly coastline. So, every day, you can discover a new beach along the Amethyst Coast.
The natural heritage of the Amethyst Coast has also been preserved. The Orpellières site in the communes of Valras and Sérignan is a fine example. Covering 150 hectares, the beach, the dunes (some of which are up to 8 meters high) and the vast area of salt meadows offer a natural landscape of outstanding beauty. The Gulf of Lion Marine Park, meanwhile, is the 1ᵉʳ natural park in the Mediterranean and the 3ᵉ natural marine park in France.
It stretches from the coast of Leucate to Cerbère on the Spanish border. You can discover this superb, unspoilt marine area by scuba diving, hiking or on a sea outing.

Hérault’s most beautiful seaside resorts
The Hérault department is one of France’s favorite tourist destinations, thanks in particular to its coastline lined with superb beaches. Campsites on the beaches of Hérault include the authentic seaside resort of Valras-Plage.
Nicknamed by some as the “Deauville of the South” and awarded the “Pavillon Bleu” label, it offers a peaceful, unspoilt setting on the shores of the Mediterranean, with over 4 km of fine sandy beaches.
Close to Valras, the coastal resort of Sérignan is also very charming. You’ll be seduced by this former winegrowing village by the sea, where life is good and nature still has its rights.
The seaside resort of Vendres is also worth a visit for its typical Mediterranean atmosphere. You’ll quickly fall under the spell of the immense sandy beaches and unspoilt nature, where you can watch a host of birds, including pink flamingos, one of the symbols of the Camargue.
Nearby, take a stroll around Sète‘s old fishing port. You can admire the colorful facades of the fishermen’s cottages, watch a nautical joust or stroll in the fresh air along the Corniche.
